The Magnum 5.9 L is an evolution of the aging 360 LA series. It got the Magnum name with new manifolds, heads, and multiport fuel injection, new cylinder heads which use a different oiling system, individually mounted rocker arms, and a CCW rotation water pump with a much improved housing.
Standard engine output was 245 hp (183 kW) and 335 lb·ft . The engine eventually produced 250 hp (190 kW) and 345 lb·ft on the version used in the Durango RT.
With the 5.9-liter engine and 3.92 axle, it's capable of pulling a 7,550-pound trailer.Chevy's Tahoe of that year was rated to pull 7,900 pounds, and Ford's Expedition was rated for 8,900 pounds. Ford's larger-for-2002 Explorer could pull a maximum of 7,300 pounds.
The 5.9-liter Magnum V8 was at the time a $595.00 option, well worth the price.
